Dals are available in plenty in Indian households and if you want to lose weight for sustainable, long-term results, it is better to eat foods that are traditionally available in your house, instead of buying low-fat packaged meals from outside.
Dals have a wide variety, from masoor, toor, chana to moth. These are rich in fiber, improve your metabolism rate, make you feel full sooner and also help to regulate blood sugar levels. Here are some recipes you can try to include in your weight loss diet:
Ingredients
- ½ cup moong dal
2 ½ cups of water
1 small onion
2 green chillies
half-inch ginger
2 garlic cloves
1 large tomato
1 tbsp ghee
¼ tsp mustard seeds
1 broken whole red chilli
½ tsp cumin seeds
¼ tsp of asafoetida
¼ tsp turmeric
¼ tsp chilli powder
¼ tsp garam masala
salt to taste
1 sprig curry leaves
1 tbsp chopped coriander leaves
03/7How to make moong dal tadka
Wash and drain moong dal. Put it in a pressure cooker on medium heat and add 1 ½ cups of water. Pressure cook for 2 whistles on medium flame. Once done, open the cooker and mash the dal. Now, finely chop an onion, green chillies, ginger and garlic cloves. Puree a large tomato.
For the tadka, heat ghee in a deep bottomed pan and add mustard seeds, 1 broken whole red chilli, and cumin seeds. Add the ginger-garlic, green chillies and curry leaves. Then add asafoetida and the chopped onions. When they turn translucent, add the pureed tomato and let it cook. Then add turmeric, chilli powder, garam masala and salt to taste. Saute for a minute. Next, add 1 cup of water, mashed moong dal and mix everything together. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot.

2 tsp Ginger garlic paste

1 tsp Oil
2 tsp Salt
05/7How to make Palak methi chana dal
Combine chana dal and water in a pressure cooker. Let it cook for about 5 whistles. Once done, drain and keep aside. Now heat oil in a wok and add cumin, kasuri methi and hing for a while. When the cumin starts to crackle, add finely chopped onion, ginger-garlic paste and saute for about 2 minutes. Add garam masala, dhania powder and salt. Next add spinach puree and water, and mix everything well. Next, add the cooked dal, mix it well and let the mix cook on a medium flame for about 5 minutes. Keep stirring continuously. Once ready, serve hot with a small portion of rice or 2 small rotis.

- 3/4 cup fresh tomato pulp
- salt to taste

07/7How to make low calorie dal makhani
Clean, wash and soak the whole urad and rajma overnight. Drain before cooking. Combine the urad and rajma with salt and 2 cups of water. Pressure cook for 6 to 7 whistles. Once done, whisk well till the urad and rajma is almost mashed. Now, add the milk, mix well and set aside.
Take a deep kadhai and heat oil in it. Add the cumin seeds. When the seeds crackle, add the onions, ginger-garlic paste and cook on a medium flame for a few seconds. Next, add the chilli powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder and 2 tbsp of water. Mix everything well and cook on a medium flame for 1 minute, while stirring continuously.
Now, add 2 tbsp of water and the tomato pulp. Keep mixing. Add the prepared dal-milk mixture and salt. Stir and let it cook on a slow flame for 10 minutes. Once ready, serve hot garnished with coriander.
