When Hollywood stars get a little more… mature, they often add food and drink ventures to create a “portfolio” career: everyone from George Clooney selling tequila, to Gwyneth Paltrow’s wellness recipes, to Stanley Tucci fronting documentaries on Italian food.
Drew Barrymore has taken things a stage further: not only has she written her own cookbook, but she regularly champions other chefs and authors on her Drew Barrymore Show on TV.
Her own book, Rebel Homemaker, is a collection of recipes and musings on food, design, parenting, gardening and more. The recipes, which she co-wrote with chef and friend Pilar Valdes, mix the super-easy and more involved, but the common thread is food that nurtures, as these four light recipes, which are just right for the start of a new year, demonstrate.
She wrote the book during the first year of the pandemic and in it reflects often on how lucky she is to have access to healthy food, as well as praising those who have fed and nurtured others during the Covid crisis.

Barrymore, who likes getting her hands dirty and loves carbs (a bowl of pasta in particular), says her favourite meal is “any breakfast my daughters make me. With varying degrees of edibility.”
Pairs with everything salad
The vinaigrette is super simple and, with its sweet tang, uses only a small handful of items that you probably already have in your pantry. A quick note on building a salad with the vinaigrette already in the bowl: we recommend starting with the heaviest ingredient on the bottom (in this case, the celery) and then adding the lighter ingredients on top (finishing with the baby rocket).
This way, when you toss the ingredients to mix, your delicate greens won’t get too overdressed. Quick and easy, this salad goes with so many things and dresses up any meal.
Drew’s harissa spaghetti
This dish comes from pantry staples, like canned tomatoes and dried oregano. The key to this dish is the harissa. It’s a Tunisian spice, and the result is this smoky and delicious flavour.
Seared halibut with saffron broth
Make sure you buy the freshest fish you can. You can substitute other lean white fish, like cod. When cooking the fish, make sure you pat the fillet dry – moisture will cause the fillet to stick to the pan and you definitely don’t want that.
Spinach-watercress soup
This recipe is incredibly simple and really delicious – and it just so happens to be vegan and jam-packed with a ton of dark greens. The crispy garbanzo garnish can be made five days in advance (and it also makes a great, healthy snack).
