If you may be struggling with diabetes and are looking to change your diet, it’s now pretty easy to find recipes that can help. Just ask Wilma Malone, Newman Regional Health Clinical Dietician and Diabetes Education Quality Coordinator — and the featured speaker at the hospital’s annual Diabetes Community Health Fair on Thursday.

Part of finding recipes is determining carbohydrate levels, and Malone says carbs can be misunderstood pretty easily. People tend to key on breads, rices and pastas when considering their carb levels, but Malone says carbs in fruits and dairy products offer energy as well as other vitamins to help keep a body healthy.

The Health Fair gave residents a chance to get blood sugar and blood checks, as well as foot screenings and information about nutrition, education and exercise. Malone says Newman Regional Health offers a range of services, including an outpatient program available by referral as well as monthly classes and periodic follow-up meetings. There are also special classes and a support group available to residents.

For more information, call Malone at (620) 343-6800, ext 21802.
